TL;DR
Buyers search homecoming dresses about 7x more than prom, and the window is only three weeks. List your formalwear as homecoming now. Also rising into September: homecoming suits and ball gowns.
The Lead
Homecoming is where the buyers are.
Google search data shows homecoming dress hit 2,240,000 searches last September. Prom dress hit 301,000 that same month. That gap isn't noise. Homecoming and prom fall months apart, and the teens shopping for one aren't searching the other.
So the formal dresses in your death pile sit in front of about seven times as many buyers with a homecoming title compared to a prom one, right now. The window is only about three weeks before homecoming peaks and drops off until next year. Source and retitle this weekend!

Four more opportunities inside the back-to-school window. Subscribers only.
Signal 01 · Nobody is talking about the men's side.
Google search data shows homecoming suit hit 33,100 searches last September, up from 480 the previous December. Almost no resellers put those words in a title, even though menswear follows the same school-dance calendar as the dresses. Current volume is back down to 880, so the climb hasn't started. Title your teen-sized suits and blazers for homecoming now.
Signal 02 · Ball gown demand peaks in September, not prom season.
Google search data shows ball gown hit 49,500 searches last September, its highest month in the year and a half we have tracked. Actual prom season in March only reached 33,100. If you have full-skirt formals sitting in inventory, list them as ball gown now, then switch to prom titles after New Year's.
Signal 03 · Year-tagged searches show up first.
Google search data shows prom dress 2026 at 4,400 searches last September, then 12,100 by December 2025 and 110,000 by January 2026, months ahead of the general prom dress term demand spike. Buyers who type the year are the earliest and most serious. Prom dress 2027 is not in our database yet, but we are adding it now so it is tracked in time for next year's analysis.
Signal 04 · Vintage and thrifted prom aren't big enough to chase yet.
Google search data shows vintage prom dress at 8,100 searches last September and thrifted prom dress at 1,300. Both rise with the March prom peak, but neither has the volume to anchor a listing strategy on its own. Work them into your item descriptions, not your titles.
The Receipts
The call. Saturday, in an off-schedule note, we told you to change one word in your wedding guest dress titles: fall to autumn. Google search data showed autumn wedding guest dress at 301,000 searches last September, six times fall wedding guest dress at 49,500.
What happened. Two confirmed sales in 72 hours. One reseller changed her titles Saturday night and sold a dress that had sat unlisted for 156 days the next morning. A second updated a Theia cocktail dress title on Monday and sold it Tuesday.
